Learning objectives

The main purpose of the course is to introduce students to the concepts of descriptive statistics and statistical inference with applications in Medicine.

At the same time, there is learning and extensive use of the SPSS statistical package, where many different groups (dataset) of medical data are analyzed.

The aim of the course is for students to be able to carry out a complete statistical analysis for any kind of medical data, using the appropriate measures and statistical controls

 

Course content

  • Basic statistical concepts
  • Descriptive statistics: graphical and numerical methods
  • Introduction to probabilities: contingencies, mutually exclusive contingencies, independent contingencies, Laws of probability: additive and multiplication law.
  • Random variables, probability distributions and main theoretical distributions
  • Discrete Random Variables: Binomial Distribution and Poisson Distribution
  • Continuous random variables: Uniform distribution and Normal distribution
  • Sample distributions and the Central Limit Theorem
  • Induction based on a sample: confidence intervals.
  • Induction based on a sample: hypothesis testing
  • Induction based on two samples: comparison of two mean values, comparison of two percentages
  • Introduction to simple linear regression
